Aging eyes seem to be one of the first signs that our bodies are not as young as they once were. Aging eye appearance might include fine lines around the outer corners of the eye known as “crow's feet". It can also include sagging, tired and thin skin around the eyelid, eyebrow, and under the eye. These are some of the most visible signs of aging. They can make you look tired and older than you feel.
Treatments for the eyes can bring back years of youth and vitality to your look, refreshing your overall appearance. They are one of the best areas to treat for an overall improvement. You can refresh your eyes with nonsurgical treatments or through a few cosmetic options.
Non-surgical Eye Rejuvenation
Restylane® and Belotero® are two dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is naturally found in human tissue and attracts water. Restylane® fillers work wonders at correcting dark circles around the eyes and tear trough hollows. Belotero® is thinner and softer than other dermal fillers, making it another ideal filler for use around the eyes. This substance enhances skin volume, reduces fine lines, and tightens loose skin around the eye.
Sculptra® Aesthetic is an injectable that is not considered a dermal filler. Instead, it works by increasing the natural collagen production of the body over the course of a few months with multiple treatments. It can also help to replenish thinning skin around the eyes.
Surgical Eye Lifts
Blepharoplasty is eyelid surgery. It can be performed on the upper and/or lower eyelids. It is the ideal solution for resolving tired, droopy-looking eyelids. It is also used to correct excess skin and fat in the upper or lower lids. Puffiness, excess skin, bags, hollows, and wrinkles can all be corrected with blepharoplasty.
Lower eyelid surgery can smoothen excess fat deposits, or "bags" under the eyes. In fact, in contemporary lower eyelid surgery, the fact is redistributed from excess areas of the lower lid to deficient areas (tear trough) of the lower lid. The procedure corrects dark circles under the eye, and masks the appearance of the "tear trough".
Some upper eyelid surgeries are considered functional when a visual field obstruction (as attested by an ophthalmologist or optometrist) exists. In these cases, your insurance may cover the surgical expense.
The surgical procedure on the upper eyelid uses an incision hidden in the crease of the upper lid. The lower lid procedure will use either an internal or external incision, depending on the needs of the patient. Upper or lower eyelid surgery takes 45 minutes to 90 minutes, respectively, depending on the procedure being performed. Upper eyelid surgery may be performed in the office under local anesthesia if the patient desires, whereas lower eyelid surgery requires some sort of sedation and is hence typically done in an operating room.
