Lip Augmentation / Lip Lift

What is Lip Augmentation?

Lip augmentation is a procedure that can make a nice difference in your overall appearance with relatively little discomfort.
The procedure has received a bad reputation over the years due to widely publicized pictures of procedures that were done incorrectly by untrained or inexperienced technicians. When performed by a cosmetic surgeon with the necessary training and experience, lip augmentation can help decrease fine lines around the mouth and add definition, shape, and fullness to thin lips. Care must be taken to ensure a natural look that stays in proportion to the rest of the face without unnatural results.

Lip augmentation can be performed by either injecting a dermal filler (such as Juvéderm® or Restylane®) into the lips, or by placing a customized silicone implant surgically into the lips. Both surgical and non-surgical lip augmentation are typically performed in the office under local anesthesia with minimal to no discomfort.

Who is a Good Candidate?

A good candidate for non-surgical lip augmentation with dermal fillers is:

  • Non-smoker
  • In good health with no serious health issues
  • Good skin elasticity
  • Reasonably “normal” skin thickness on and around the lips
  • At least some visible pink lip on upper and lower lips
  • Realistic expectations

A good candidate for surgical lip lift is:

  • Non-smoker
  • In good health with no serious health issues
  • Good skin elasticity
  • Reasonably “normal” skin thickness on and around the lips
  • At least some visible pink lip on upper and lower lips
  • Realistic expectations

How is Lip Augmentation Performed?

Lip augmentation, both surgical and non-surgical, is an in-office procedure with minimal to no downtime.

In non-surgical lip augmentation with a dermal filler, the lips may either be anesthetized completely with a “dental nerve block” if desired or performed without a dental block. The filler substance contains the local anesthetic lidocaine so that only the first few needle pricks are slightly felt until the lips will feel numb. Most patient tolerate the procedure well without an additional nerve block since the injectiong needles are extremely small. Most lip injection procedures take only approximately 15-30 minutes. For those that are new to the procedure, it may be better to do 2 to 3 procedures injecting smaller amounts of filler over a longer period of time, each 1 to 2 weeks apart. The recovery for lip augmentation is minimal. Most people will experience swelling for a couple of days and bruising that may last as long as a week. The average patient can return to normal activities the same day or the next day with no problem.

Surgical lip enhancement/lip lift is a procedure performed in the office under local anesthesia. The procedure takes approximately 1 hour and associated with little to no downtime. The patient usually comes for an initial consultation where the procedure is discussed with the patient and measurements are taken for appropriate sizing of the implants. The implants are custom-ordered for each patient’s specific needs and placed through tiny incision at each corner of the mouth. The procedure may be associated with minimal swelling and/or bruising that usually subsides, if present, within a few days.

What Material is Used in Lip Augmentation?

Non-surgical lip augmentation is performed using a hylauronic acid based dermal filler, usually Juvéderm® or Restylane®. These fillers are considered very soft gels for a more natural feel and appearance to the lips. The results typically last 6 to 12 months, sometimes longer, but this is very patient dependent.

Surgical lip augmentation is performed by placing a customized silicone implant into the upper and lower lips. These implants are very safe and are manufactured specifically for placement into the lips.
