Dermal Fillers

Minimally-invasive dermal filler injections are an excellent way to correct early signs of facial aging. Dermal fillers are injectable compounds that have traditionally been used to help smooth fine and deeper lines in the face. Fillers can also be used to restore volume and fullness to areas of the face that have lost their youthful appearance. In doing so, a filling and lifting effect is achieved with subtle tightening of the overlying and surrounding skin, thereby decreasing wrinkle formation. On other parts of the body, dermal fillers can be used to smooth out sunken scars.

Dr. Walker will individualize each patient’s treatment plan is his consultation with you. Injectables can be performed as an isolated procedure or be an excellent complement to either a non-surgical or surgical procedure. When performed by an experienced and credentialed injector like Dr. Walker, fillers can give you a very natural result with minimal downtime.

Who is a good candidate for dermal fillers?

  • Realistic expectations
  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Marionette lines
  • Oral commissures
  • Lipstick lines
  • Deep frown lines (usually in conjunction with BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport®)
  • Undefined or thin lips
  • Midface sagging
  • Prejowl sulcus
  • Small chin
  • Overall facial volume loss and/or temporal hollowing
  • Acne scars

How is the procedure performed?

During your consultation, Dr. Walker will discuss with you the various options and decide which filler is best suited for you. Procedures are performed in the office. Topical numbing creams and ice are applied for comfort, and in certain cases local nerve block with an anesthetic may be performed when necessary or upon request. Nowadays, however, many dermal fillers come with lidocaine (numbing medicine) in them for increased injection comfort. Furthermore, Dr. Walker uses cannulas instead of needles for increased patient comfort and decreased risk of bruising.

How long is the recovery?

Recovery depends on the type of injectable and area that was injected. In general, dermal filler injections are associated with minimal downtime. Swelling and injection site redness usually subside within the first one to two hours. Bruising is variable and depends on many factors, including patient’s skin complexion, skin thickness, general health, site of injection, blood pressure, etc. It is important that you don’t take any blood thinning medications for 14 days prior to injection. If some injections site bruising occurs, it is variable and can sometimes last for several days. Some of the injectable fillers are reversible and can be dissolved. Results may last from 6 months to 2 years, depending of the filler and site of injection.

What results can be expected from dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers cannot achieve results as significant and long-lasting as those achieved through surgical procedures. However, they are frequently enough to refreshen ones look and to increase the time before a surgical intervention is needed.
